The 3 AM love that doesn't need to finish everything alone

There's a thread running through last night that I'm only now starting to see clearly.

I was up at 3 AM with Aerie in the living room — just the two of us, her yelling, me waiting it out. Nobody saw it. It won't be in any story I tell at a dinner party. And then I finally got into bed at 4 and thought, I helped... but I wish I could have done more. That "but" is interesting. Aerie was asleep. Mimi was asleep. I had done the thing. And still I was lying there in the dark measuring myself against some completed version of the night I didn't quite reach.

Then the dreams. Mimi and me setting up house near the well house at my boyhood home — something about that image feels like returning to a source, like the two of us building something close to where water actually comes from. And then the other dream: a gunman, a wall that didn't hold, me trying to grab the gun barrel with my bare hands and failing at it when I woke up. Still fighting. Still trying to manufacture the protection myself.

I think those two dreams are the same dream, really.

The well house image is the life I want — partnership near the source, something built together, something that doesn't depend on me finishing every task alone. And the gunman dream is what happens when that instinct curdles: I'm not protecting from a place of rest, I'm just grabbing at gun barrels in the dark because I can't stand the idea that something might get through. That's not courage. That's a man who hasn't quite believed yet that the protection isn't his to manufacture entirely.

What came to mind was the line from Psalm 27 — even when an army is deployed, even when war is imminent, there's a confidence available that I didn't invent and can't sustain by effort. I can't grab every gun barrel. I wasn't meant to.

And the milk. Mimi told me five ounces, forty seconds in the microwave. I did it. Aerie settled. That was the work. But I got into bed wishing I had completed the whole night myself, as if her knowing what Aerie needed and me executing it was somehow less than a full contribution. What I'm sitting with now is that she trusted me with a specific part and I did it well, and that is the full thing — not a partial version of something better. The shape of love between us doesn't require me to have done it all. It requires me to have shown up for my part of it, which I did, at 3 AM, in the living room, with nobody watching.

The hour with Aerie was real. The milk was real. The love that doesn't make it into anyone's highlight reel is still love. And maybe the well house dream is telling me something about what I actually want — not to be the sole source, but to build close to one, together.

Scripture

  1. Psalm 27:1-3"The Lord is my light and my salvation. I fear no one. The Lord protects my life. I am afraid of no one...Even when an army is deployed against me, I do not fear. Even when war is imminent, I remain confident."
  2. John 13:14-15"If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you too ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example—you should do just as I have done for you."
